Holistic Health Fall 2006 Newsletter
Fall has come and gone and the winter winds have found us. Here in the Northwest the combination of cold and wet gives us two responsibilities for cultivating our vital health and living with the seasons of nature. One is avoiding the accumulation of dampness in our bodies and the other is to conserve and concentrate our vital heat. In short we should stay dry and warm.
Naturopathic and Chinese Medicine share these recommendations for this season:
1) Keep the feet warm, especially when upper respiratory infections strike. Wool is best.
2) Keep the back of the neck covered. In Chinese Medicine this is the main entry gate for colds to invade. Covering with a scarf makes the difference.
3) Warm, well cooked broths and stews are ideal foods for the season.
It has been a great pleasure to meet and to be able to care for so many of Dr. Nyvlts patients. Thank you for your confidence and trust and please let me know if there is anything that I can do for you. Thank you especially for those who have referred new patients to our office. This is a highest compliment and we will do our best to care for those whom you care enough to recommend our services.
Pavel and I share a great deal of complementary ideas and views and it was wonderful to have worked with him. He and I are remaining in contact via email and are looking forward to future collaboration. Pavel has returned to the Czech Republic and is doing quite well.
Many of you are now aware of the complete (aka Naturopathic Physiotherapy) available in the office. These pleasant and non invasive treatments take about 45 minutes and have a variety of benefits. They improve the quality of circulating blood via detoxification, immune enhancement, and improved digestive function. And with any particular concern we can then direct this supercharged blood to the area affected with various physiotherapy units that in themselves have healing benefit. The end result is a tremendous support of the healing processes of the body. There is no other technique or pill that can replace what these treatments can do. If you would like to borrow a DVD of a standard treatment to see what it looks like, please stop by the office to pick one up. Link to the Hydrotherapy page above for more information or call us at 503-294-7070 to schedule an appointment.
I was recently interviewed on KOIN-6 news about the benefit of hydrotherapy for cold and flu. During the influenza epidemic of 1918 the doctors that used hydrotherapy as part of their treatment reported significantly fewer lost lives than those who did not (less than 1% compared to 20-25%). If you would like a complimentary CD copy of the interview please stop by the office to pick one up. It will play on Windows Media Player. The hydrotherapy treatments in the office today are even more effective than the techniques used in the 1918 epidemic. One of the added benefits we commonly use today for respiratory infections is called Diathermy. The diathermy feels like a velvety warmth emanating from a heating pad or lamp but it does much more. Diathermy alone is powerful against respiratory infections including sinusitis, sore throats, bronchitis, flus, and even pneumonia. If you are worried about a strep throat infection we can do a rapid strep to quickly find out and then treat accordingly.
The office has recently been contacted by several former patients that were unable to say goodbye to Pavel or to be introduced to me personally. This of course brings many questions about my philosophy and clinical approach. I am always happy to discuss these subjects and if you would like to meet me before working together, to see if we are a good fit, then please call the office and we can schedule a time to meet. These things are better in person but if you are at a distance we can chat over the phone as well. I wish you well regardless.
