Priessnitz Physio-Therapy Spa |
My trip to the Annual Priessnitz Hydrotherapy congress in the Czech Republic was quite enjoyable and rejuvenating. The Congress was at the Priessnitz Spa (www.priessnitz.cz) and included invited guests from around the world. Pavel was there and he is doing wonderfully and sends his best to all. The Priessnitz Spa has an incredible history and is truly the fountainhead of the modern naturopathic profession. Founded 185 years ago by Vincent Priessnitz, a farmer turned hydropath, the spa developed hydrotherapy techniques that are now used the world over. The Naturopathic Physiotherapy Treatments (aka Constitutional Hydrotherapy) at my office incorporate hydrotherapy methods descended and evolved from the techniques Priessnitz pioneered. Time tested has true value in the healing arts.
This European spa is quite different than one we may find in North America. Resident guests are evaluated by the medical staff and then prescribed an appropriate course of treatment - of diet, massage, hiking in the woods, and of course hydrotherapy and physical therapy. The spa treats patients for heart disease, hormonal problems such as low thyroid, metabolic conditions such as diabetes, and patients with mood challenges such as depression- as well as other conditions. These long standing or slow developing conditions are considered ‘chronic’ and respond well to naturopathic treatments such as the spa offers – building health to overcome a dis-ease state.
My presentation at the Congress was on the use of Naturopathic Physiotherapy Treatments, specifically their role in infectious conditions, including cases of pneumonia, infections of the bone, and diabetic gangrene. This is the area of ‘acute’ or rapidly developing conditions. Naturopathy differentiates all conditions as to whether they are either acute or chronic for purpose of organizing appropriate treatment protocols.
