PRP Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP is a cutting-edge type of regenerative medicine that uses your body’s growth factors or platelets to ease swelling, improve circulation, and promote healing.

Platelets are blood cells that play several different roles. They help clot your blood if you experience a cut or laceration, and they also contain proteins that help wounds heal.

Injecting areas of tissue damage or inflammation with high concentrations of platelets encourage wellness.

What conditions can PRP treat?

PRP is incredibly versatile. Sometimes it’s used in coordination with microneedling to address dermatological imperfections like acne scars, vampire facials that rejuvenate the complexion; other times, it’s used to promote hair growth in men and women.

The team at the Portland Clinic of Holistic Health usually recommends PRP to address musculoskeletal injuries, including:

  • Chronic Joint Injuries
  • Tendon injuries and tears
  • Ligament Injuries and tears
  • Arthritis

Regenerative medicine works to heal, restore, or regenerate damaged cells and tissues throughout your body. Traditionally, musculoskeletal problems required surgery. However, thanks to regenerative medicine techniques, it’s possible to promote healing with a series of outpatient procedures. The team of holistic medical experts at the Portland Clinic of Holistic Health in Downtown Portland, Oregon, proudly offers several types of regenerative medicine, including regenerative joint injections and neural therapy. After a thorough review of your condition and symptoms, your doctor determines whether PRP therapy is a good choice for treatment.

What happens during PRP treatment?

The team at the Portland Clinic of Holistic Health performs PRP treatment onsite in their state-of-the-art facility.

First, your provider draws a sample of your blood and places it into a machine called a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins around at a rapid rate of speed, separating your platelets from the rest of your blood.

After completing this process, your provider injects your platelets into an area with tissue damage or inflammation.

For example, if you tear your ACL while playing sports, your doctor might recommend PRP treatment to prevent further complications and to speed up your recovery process.

Does PRP present any side effects?

PRP treatment is safe and well-tolerated. However, as your body starts to initiate the natural healing process, you may experience inflammation. This is nothing to worry about, though, as the treatment uses your blood, meaning side effects are primarily nonexistent.

Following your PRP treatment session, you can return to normal activities right away. On average, a PRP appointment takes between 30-45 minutes.

Am I a good candidate for PRP therapy?

To determine if you’re a candidate for PRP therapy, make an appointment with the team at the Portland Clinic of Holistic Health.

Following a physical exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your goals for treatment, the team can develop a plan that aligns with your needs, goals, and budget.
